Top F&B Spots to Enjoy Our Local Cuisine During National Day

As Singapore’s 56th birthday draws near, preparations for National Day have kicked into high gear. After a muted virtual celebration in 2020, Singaporeans will undoubtedly look forward to the fanfare and excitement of a live National Day Parade once more as we celebrate the spirit of the nation.

And what are birthdays without a fitting birthday feast to commemorate the occasion? There’s no better way to mark this special day than to indulge in Singapore’s own treasured delicacies and favourites like Chicken Rice, Chilli Crab, and more.

Here’s a quick and handy guide to where you can enjoy some of Singapore’s tastiest local delights with your family on this exciting day!

Bak Kut Teh (Sin Heng Bak Koot Teh)

While Bak Kut Teh comes in a few different forms, it’s unsurprising to see why the local version with thick, meaty ribs and hearty and peppery pork broth is one of our favourites. If you want some good quality Bak Kut Teh, then look no further than Sin Heng Bak Koot Teh with its tender pork ribs served in a claypot.

Ever since it started in 1981, the eatery has aimed to provide some of the best tasting Bak Kut Teh around. Its diverse menu also includes a good variety of other dishes including Pig Trotters, Sesame Oil Chicken, and Special Bak Kut Teh which includes a mix of vegetables, herbs, and spices along with the pork ribs.

Sin Heng Bak Koot Teh also has a range of zi char style dishes in case Bak Kut Teh isn’t quite enough — all of which is complemented beautifully with either yam rice or white rice.

Chicken Rice (Katong Mei Wei)

Few foods are as quintessentially Singaporean as Chicken Rice. But don’t be deceived by the simplicity of such a dish — the smooth and moist chicken on top of a bed of fragrant rice, combined with tangy and aromatic ginger and chilli, is one of the best meals you can have on our island.

The 33-year-old stall provides the usual steamed and roasted chickens, and also a selection of other meats and dishes like Char Siew, Braised Beancurd, and Salted Fish Bean Sprouts.

As purveyors of this classic dish, Katong Mei Wei knows what it takes to serve delicious and high quality Chicken Rice. That’s why it has modernised itself to meet the demands of foodies today, becoming the first chicken rice stall to have a self-ordering kiosk, ensuring that patrons get their food as quickly as possible.

Chilli Crab (No. 3 Crab Delicacy Seafood Restaurant)

Ask any seafood lover in Singapore about a must-try dish, and Chilli Crab will almost always be on top. After all, what’s not to like? One taste of the fresh and succulent crab meat, enveloped by sweet and spicy chilli sauce, will convince you that it’s one of the best gastronomic experiences money can buy.

If you want to dig into this Singaporean delicacy, then pay a visit to No. 3 Crab Delicacy Seafood Restaurant. Established in 2001 at its original location at 265 Outram Road, it has since moved to Link Hotel and opened another outlet at 21 Teck Chye Terrace.

Nothing shouts “true blue Singaporean” seafood like its wide range of seafood and local delights. You can expect to find a variety of signature dishes such as Drunken Prawns, Sambal Siput, and of course, Chilli Crab.

Even if Chilli Crab is not your favourite, don’t fret. No. 3 Crab Delicacy has several other crab dishes on offer such as Black Pepper, Curry, Salted Egg Yolk, and even Soft Shell Crab.

Satay (Syifa Satay)

Good food doesn’t need to be excessively complex or expensive. Take the example of satay — tender and juicy meat on wooden skewers is as simple as it gets, yet it’s one of our favourite foods for a reason.

If you want flavourful satay which delivers an authentic Singaporean taste, then you can count on Syifa Satay. Apart from its standard offerings of chicken, beef, and mutton, you’ll be able to find uncommon choices like prawn, beef tripe (babat), or even duck satay!

Plus, if you’re still hungry, you can’t go wrong with some of Syifa Satay’s specialties such as Beef Ribs Kuey Teow, Gado Gado, Soto Ayam, and Tahu Goreng.

Curry Fish Head (The Coriander Cafe)

Blending the best of two different cultures — Indian and Chinese — Curry Fish Head is definitely a dish that Singaporeans can be proud of. The sharp, spicy, and sour flavour of the curry tastes heavenly with rice thanks to its unique mix of herbs, spices, and vegetables, and is the perfect dish to share with family and friends.

Different variations of this popular dish exist, with an Assam version providing a distinct flavour profile and spicy kick. If you’re not sure which you should go with, you can’t go wrong with getting two! The good news is that The Coriander Cafe carries both types of Curry Fish Head so you won’t miss out on any of the delicious goodness from either version.

Now that your main dish is settled, you can round off your meal with the cafe’s extensive range of traditional Chinese dishes such as Sweet and Sour Pork, Sambal Kang Kong, Fu Rong Omelette, and a whole lot more!
